I am looking for the opinions on blood and body fluid policies in a non-health care setting.
Last week, some employees came to me requesting I do something about worker sanitation, spitting on the shop floor, etc. The reason the issue came to a head is because one employee had a run of the mill nose bleed at work, not resulting from any type of incident, and left used Kleenex all over his work space, in the bathroom, and spitting bloody sputum on the ground. While this is pretty disgusting, there is also the issue of spread of infection.
Management has suggested I write up a blood and body fluid policy, but I am not sure if this is the right route to travel. For one, can I really back up enforcing a policy that is supposed to prevent workers from hacking up their nasties on the floor? And two, I have not been able to find a blood/body fluid policy for any other workplace unless they have likelihood of high risk exposure occurring.
I would greatly appreciate the groups input on this, and also if you do have a blood/body fluid policy that you feel applies to my situation that you are willing to share, I would greatly appreciate if you could send it to me! Thanks for your time!
