Good Friday Afternoon everyone;

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with a hands-on training exercise for spill response? I was thinking of replacing the chemical with something like watered down corn syrup so as not to endanger the environment any and explain to them that it's TEG or something of the like. I would do a Winter and a Summer version of this.
Any input is appreciated.

We used water for most of our spill tests. Other response scenarios included using duct tape on employee to stage a medical issue as well.

although i have never conducted training myself i have been involved in hands on spill response training. we were given a scenario to respond to but the substance was not confirmed we were given some cluse as to what it might have been. they were in the form of witness reports and inventory logs. the trainers would follow us around and if you were doing something wrong that would indanger your health in a real scenario they would tell you your symptoms like your feeling dizzy, your starting to cough, congradulations your now dead. I was involved with one that was acid and they went to the extent of using smoke machines. they cranked up the smoke machines when one of my team members did something wrong that would have made the reaction worse in real life. the other group in my training had to deal with an unknown powder that could have either been a deadly poison or corn startch. and as for the ppe we went all out in Level A suits with full air what ever we felt was needed to get the clean up done safely.

Hi,

A few things:

It is amazing that you are taking responsibility and training your team to respond to spills. If you need to create a mock spill, you are not allowed to use corn syrup or any other thing other than water.
I would suggest to contact Cliff Holland from spill management Inc.
I took a few simulations and site specific training with him, he is very good and works with all the big players.

Hello
Depending on what kind of response you would like to do
I was part of the planning of a mock spill where we pretended a barrel of sodium chloride was spilled. It took some time to plan, but for our mock we involved the local ambulance, local fire department, site environmental team and site first aiders
It went well and all parties noticed deficencies with how there side handled it. It was a great learning experience.
If you would like more information please email me at chalmerssean@hotmail.com
Attached is a picture from the mock spill

We use a dilute solution of Ammonia, from the retail product available from supermarkets [about 5 %]. Everyone can smell it without any problems. Creates a real scenario.

in the UK the fire fighters are allowed an hour a day to train in the gym, a half hour is manditory and they can do what ever they want for the other half most just stay in the gym. i know there is no ambulance in the uk so they have a bit more time on ther hands but im sure a half hour could be found on each shift to do some training.
