Health, Safety & Wellness Specialist – Public Health Services- City of Hamilton
Join the Human Resources Division in the City Manager’s Office and apply your proven knowledge and experience in support of Public Health Services. As the Health, Safety and Wellness Specialist, you will develop, co-ordinate, implement and maintain a comprehensive Health, Safety and Wellness program for your assigned client department. Working collaboratively with staff in the client department as well as Human Resources, you will support and augment proactive department and corporate wellness, health and safety programs.
Specifically, your duties as Health, Safety & Wellness Specialist for Public Health Services will include:
• Co-ordinating the planning of a results-oriented health, safety and wellness program reflecting the Department’s service priorities, standards and objectives
• Developing and providing leadership in the implementation of occupational health and safety audit processes to ensure legislative compliance and consistent health and safety practices within the Department
• Regularly monitoring the health and safety policy and accident prevention program and recommending any necessary changes and amendments
• Providing risk assessment and statistical analysis in the development and implementation of corporate and departmental primary prevention programs and procedures
• Responding to concerns of managers, supervisors and employees about a wide range of workplace health, safety and wellness issues, and proactively addressing emerging issues
• Ensuring that mandatory Health & Safety training requirements are met through personal delivery of training and other educational methods
• Developing and disseminating employee health, safety and wellness educational materials and communication strategies
• Participating in task forces, corporate initiatives and committees, e.g., playing an advisory role in the Department’s Joint Health and Safety Committee and Wellness Committee
• Providing guidance and direction to all levels of management on safety matters
Your qualifications as Health, Safety & Wellness Specialist for Public Health Services include:
• Considerable experience in health promotion, employee wellness and occupational health and safety programs in a major unionized public or private sector organization, preferably in a municipal, health care or community service organization
• Proven consultation and auditing skills at all organizational levels, demonstrating your ability to apply a broad perspective requiring an integrated knowledge of human resources management, related disciplines and business processes
• Experience in project management and program planning, co-ordination and evaluation, with a background in employee wellness and occupational health & safety
• Demonstrated data analysis, planning, project management, monitoring and evaluation skills
• Proven organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects and resolve problems in a multidisciplinary environment
• A thorough knowledge of employment and related legislation, contractual obligations and sound human resources practices
• Excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal, facilitation and training skills
• Well developed ability to recognize hazards and unsafe working conditions via hygiene monitoring techniques, investigative strategies and research abilities
• Ability to exercise discretion and judgment, and work with a degree of autonomy.
• A relevant professional designation (such as Canadian Registered Safety Professional, Certified Occupational Health Nurse, or Certified Health and Safety Consultant), or equivalent, will be considered an asset.
