FULL TIME HEALTH & SAFETY COORDINATOR
DUTIES: The Health and Safety Coordinator promotes safety awareness, positive attitudes towards safety, and works towards identifying and controlling health and safety hazards. Responsibilities include; advising workers and management about safety legislation in order to comply with the OHSA, applicable Regulations, Standards and best laboratory practices, as well as WSIB claims management.
The Health and Safety Coordinator works together with supervisory staff to ensure that workers are educated and monitored in the proper handling and controlling of chemical and biological substances as well as how to control potential ergonomic and physical hazards.
Other primary responsibilities include the investigation of incidents and accidents and determining causes to ensure that preventative measures are taken. The Health and Safety Coordinator will follow existing safety programs/training requirements for all staff including WHMIS, Fire Safety, Spill Control, waste management (removal and certificate of air updates) and Safety Equipment usage and will obtain services of outside training providers when necessary.
The Health and Safety Coordinator will organize and work with the Joint Health & Safety
Committee (JHSC) committee to resolve all health and safety concerns whether, from
workplace inspections, incident reports or worker concerns. The Health and Safety
Coordinator will attend regular JHSC meetings and other meetings related to health and safety,
and participate in monthly Safety Equipment and General Inspections.
Follow up on third party inspections (MOL).
QUALIFICATIONS:
College, technical institute diploma or University degree
Occupational Health and Safety Certificate
Standard First Aid Training
Experience in a Health & Safety role, 2-3 years preferred, including managing WSIB claims
Experience training others in Health & Safety aspects, preferred
Experience in a laboratory setting preferred
Excellent communication, organization, and leadership skills to work with employees, management, and external government agencies during inspections
Intermediate computer skills using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel & Access)
