Greetings,
I have a question about the reasoning/intention of Section 88 of Ontario Regulation 851 Industrial Establishments regarding clear space adequate for safe operating and maintenance... of cupola or melting unit and any wall structure, equipment or operation. Subsection 4 specifically requires a working space of not less than 1.8 meters from the furnace shell or pouring spout. Is this because of the chance of a rupture of the shell or some other reason? Is it specifically related to molten metal or any molten material above a specific temperature?
The situation I am looking at is not a foundry nor is it molten metal but it is molten material that is not cast in any way (waste product) so I want to know the reasons behind this section to see if it needs to be applied or if alternate methods of protection are acceptable. I can't determine alternate protection until I know what specific hazard the regulation is referring to. Thanks for the help!
Cheers,
Dan
