Service Unit Manager, General Health and Safety Services, CCOHS
Through its services and products, CCOHS advances health and safety in Canadian workplaces, and the physical, social and mental well being of working people in Canada.
The General Health and Safety Services Unit provides a comprehensive service of information and supports work-related health and safety initiatives on all areas of workplace health and safety to improve the total health of the individual – mental, physical and psychosocial.
Reporting to the Vice President/Director General, the Service Unit Manager champions excellence of performance, ensures the success of the planning and plan implementation process, manages the staff of the Service Unit getting the best out of people and maximizing their potential, provides leadership, sets an example to others and creates a healthy workplace for people to thrive in.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1) Aligns initiatives, programs, services and activities of the Service Unit with CCOHS’ Strategic Plan, and communicates the vision, strategy, plans, priorities and goals of the Service Unit with clarity and commitment.
2) Ensures that the strategic goals, priorities and annual business plans of the Service Unit are based on a comprehensive perspective, taking into consideration the changing world of work, the evolving needs of Canadian workplaces, advancing knowledge in workplace Health and Safety, new technology developments and specific circumstances at CCOHS.
3) Designs Service Unit initiatives to enhance operational efficiency. Reviews and revises programs and work activities to meet changing needs and circumstances, incorporates diverse innovations and perspectives, and sets realistic timelines and clear accountabilities for staff.
4) Promotes collaboration by regularly sharing information and communicating vertically and horizontally, by demonstrating understanding and respect of the views of others, by building team spirit, and by ensuring that commitments are followed through.
5) Delivers excellence in performance through action management by following through on the Service Unit Plans from planning to implementing, monitoring, evaluating and reporting, and by allocating and managing resources to maximize output.
6) Cultivates effective relationships with relevant people and organizations in Canada and abroad to advance CCOHS’ image, impact and effectiveness, to gain added value through embarking on mutually beneficial ventures, and representing CCOHS at selected meetings.
7) Demonstrates excellence in people management by delivering clear instructions, managing performance and accountability, coaching, providing opportunities for growth, managing workloads to avoid overloading and conflicts of demand, and balancing the needs of staff and CCOHS.
8) Exercises good financial management of the Service Unit by preparing and adhering to budgets and managing unit resources transparently.
7) Serves through integrity and respect by demonstrating CCOHS’ core values and ethics in personal behavior, and integrating CCOHS’ core values and ethics into Service Unit practices. Builds and promotes a safe, healthy and respectful unit in which dignity and quality of working life are a priority.
Education
University degree with specialization in occupational health and safety, or in a field related to health and safety.
Experience
Several years significant experience in management and project management, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience with managing professional employees.
Experience leading a multi-functional team in a matrix environment.
Other Requirements
Excellent communications skills, oral and written and demonstrated capacity to work with others.
Knowledge of database management systems, operating systems and search and retrieval software.
Ability to communicate in both official languages is desirable.
Salary
Commensurate with education and experience.
