The Canadian Union of Public Employees, Canada’s largest union, is accepting applications for a permanent, full-time bilingual Health and Safety Assistant to work in its Research, Job Evaluation and Health and Safety Branch, at CUPE’s National Office located in Ottawa, Ontario.

GENERAL FUNCTION

The bilingual Health and Safety Assistant will research, initiate and process reports and documents relating to health and safety matters.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES

·Assist in developing, updating, and editing of health and safety materials. Maintain and distribute resource documents and training materials as required.
·Assist in conducting research assignments.
·Initiate and prepare to completion documents, correspondence, forms, texts and reports as required.
·Analyze and report on information from technical reports, publications, including but not limited to scientific journals, collective agreements, legislation and other source material.
·Request and obtain information from labour organizations, government, research centres, etc. Provide information to labour and other organizations as required.
·Develop questionnaires and analyze results.
·Maintain updated records, files and lists of health and safety workshops, library materials, correspondence, materials inventories and budget documents, as required.
·Assist in the organization, planning and coordination of staff and national committee meetings; prepare material and documentation; attend staff meetings, take and prepare minutes in both official languages; write, proofread, and process to completion, reports or drafts; and ensure appropriate follow-up, as required.
· Other related duties as may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

·University or community college education or equivalent combination of education and directly-related experience involving occupational health and safety. Formal education, preferably in occupational health and safety and/or environment is highly desirable.
·Three to five years of demonstrated experience with progressively increasing responsibilities involving occupational health and safety.
·Knowledge and understanding of health, safety and environment technical materials and legislation.
·Experience with a wide range of computer applications, including statistical applications.
·Knowledge of computer software applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Microsoft Outlook, PowerPoint, and an ability to learn other software.
·A high degree of accuracy and self-motivation is essential. The successful applicant must have an excellent knowledge of general office work and be able to perform well with minimum supervision.
·An ability to effectively establish priorities and meet deadlines, while working in a high-pressure work setting.
·Above average oral and written communication skills in English and in French.

WEEKLY SALARY RANGE: $1,213.96 to $1,231.85 (plus 7% bilingual bonus)
