COURSE INFORMATION
More and more, companies are acknowledging that adhering to principles of usable design may:
- help the organization meet various safety standards,
- reduce injuries,
- improve customer share, and add profit to the financial picture.

However, acknowledging possible advantage is not the same as embracing and supporting integration of usability techniques!

Those with expertise in usability, need to help those with technical training, such as engineers, project managers and software programmers, gain a better appreciation of why tackling usability issues early in the design process can be advantageous for all stakeholders.

Introductory talks with clients about potential or hypothetical improvement for their projects tends to meet with glassy-eyed stares from those who pride themselves on their technical training. Dr. MacGregor has found that it
is much easier to get buy-in, support, and engagement from engineers, designers, and other technical people, as well as financial decision-makers, if they actually get a chance to see how I am mapping out and analyzing their
situation of concern so I can speak their language - and slowly introduce them to mine!

Dr. MacGregor has developed an analytical technique that is part mapping, and part brain-storming that can be done in small groups (like in a board room). Allowing clients to experience usability first-hand using some fairly
straightforward techniques helps them see their own projects from a slightly broader angle. Again, quick techniques like cognitive walkthroughs with think-aloud techniques done in a board-room can be very powerful
for getting buy-in.

The workshop will map out some "tools" and "approaches" for helping ergonomists, human factors specialists, and other usability experts to bring usability into the boardroom or project kick-off meeting.
