Ergonomics Standard -CSA Standard Z1004: Workplace Ergonomics available for review until May 17
A new CSA Ergonomics Standard -CSA Standard Z1004: Workplace Ergonomics has just been posted in its draft form, for public review at: https://review.csa.ca/opr/opr_list.asp (english only) The review process is open for 60 days, closing on May 17, 2010.
CSA Standards are developed with representation from many groups, which in this case includes business, labour, provincial and federal bodies as well as ergonomists and academics. Many members of the Technical Committee for this Standard are members of ACE, however ACE is officially represented on the Technical Committee by one representative.
The Committee has been meeting for approximately 2 years. The public review allows comments to be submitted to the CSA over the next 60 days, following which the Technical Committee will consider them for the next version of the Standard. The Committee would value your inputs to make the Standard as valuable a document as possible.
Please note that the CSA has developed this document under the Health and Safety group of standards (CSA Z1000). As a result it is not solely an ergonomics text; rather an application of ideas and principles to improve an organization's health and safety performance.
The Committee wished to incorporate a range of information and tools within the Standard's guidance materials (included in Annex A of the Standard). This would enable workplaces to use the Standard immediately upon purchase without the need to obtain additional resources. In the Draft Standard, available for review, Annex A is not yet included as it is not yet completed. One of the challenges for completing this portion of the Standard, is the need to finalize the wording in the Standard itself in order to define what tools would be available for use in Annex A. For example, some wording under discussion is that 'validated tools, methods, checklists and standards' will be included in the Annex. This wording has not yet been confirmed. It is however hoped that public review of the Standard will assist in finalizing the wording relevant to Annex A, therefore clarifying the decision of what tools to include in it. Rather than slow the process down, the Standard was released with the Annex pending. Your comments on what should be included in this part of the Standard are welcomed as well.
Members of the public are invited to review the Draft and to submit their comments to the CSA. Please also feel free to send this information to your colleagues, employers and other parties / organizations who may be interested in reviewing the draft and providing comment. Public comments can be submitted online by following the directions on the CSA Public Review web page and clicking the "comments tab".
Submitted to workscape on behalf of ACE by Sarah Webster, ACE Ontario President.
