A free conference on how human factors impact safety and what can be done to combat these factors will take place in Qualicum Beach on November 1, 2008. The conference, Human Factors – Why bad things happen to good people, will explore a variety of workplace safety issues including hazard recognition, identifying root causes, substance abuse, fatigue, technological change and an aging workforce.

The co-operative safety conference has been organized by an industry-union steering committee comprised of forestry, wood products manufacturing, pulp and paper, WorkSafeBC and BC Forest Safety Council representatives. With a goal of finding new ways of helping workers and employers eliminate human factor-related fatalities and serious injuries on the job, organizers hope to draw forest workers and employers from around the province.

Presenters and topics to be discussed at the conference include:

· Redefining Impairment: MaryAnne Arcand, BC Forest Safety Council Forestry TruckSafe director
· Identifying Hazards / Assessing Risk: Mark Haupt and Ross Munro, Western Forest Products health and safety advisors
· Under the Surface: Incident Root Causes: Michael Duff, WorkSafeBC occupational safety officer
· A Personal Safety Program: Al Lundgren, retired faller

The conference will close with a session by Mueller and social scientist, Bert Painter, summarizing issues around human error as a contributory cause of workplace incidents and how to use the human factors concept to help improve workplace health and safety.

Interested attendees can register for the conference by visiting the BC Forest Safety Council’s web site www.bcforestsafe.org (http://www.bcforestsafe.org) and filling out a registration form.
