Hello all,
Can anyone point me in the right direction to find what rules, regs, standards, etc. that we would need to comply with for the following. We wish to create a work platform that would measure roughly 4' x 8' x 30" h. The staff need to access a large storage bin that is open on the top. Consideration had been given to the tilting table but the contents would spill out uncontrollably before we were actually able to access them. We are in Ontario.
Many thanks,
Lynn

Hi Lynn,

Under the OHSA, it is under O. Reg 213/91 - Construction

Section Heading is Scaffolds and Platforms, s. 125-136

Scaffolds and Platforms are referenced and in the index in the back under platforms, etc.:good:

Thank you E Gordon,

I have had a chance to look at that section of the OH&SA and not sure how well it really fits to our situation.

The basic concept is comparable to a large table. As a matter of fact that is what one would actuallty think it is. The dimensions of 4 feet by 8 feet are the table top. Very much larger than my dining room table. The top of the table is only 30" above floor height.

Is an engineer really going to be necessary to pass it for use? Would it need guardrails which in turn would restrict the workers from using it for task it is needed for? One worker stands on the table and removes product from the bin and passes the product off to a worker at floor level.

We are a very small company and it is important that we find a financially feasible solution to this situation while keeping in mind that we must protect the workers from potential hazards.

Best regards,

Lynn

Lynn, you would need guardrails. MoL uses the 2 foot rule from Building Code.
For such a simple structure, you would not need a P. Eng. approval.
