November 5th is Take your kids to work day. Just curious how other professionals control the influx of kids and whether you provide them an orientation about safety before being allowed to pair up with their parent.

Any comments would be apprecaited.

Hey SD
In the past I have treated as a new employee but the orientation I give is not so in depth as a regular employee. The kids need to know how to behave while on site or on the premises and how to conduct themselves in an injury event or an emergency event that may require an evacuation or other such action. They are used to this as they are taught in school the proper responses and the workplace needs to support what they have learned so far.
Hope this helps although just my opinion.

SD,
I have posted posters at each log-in station at the shop stating that Nov. 5th is take your kid to work day, and that all employees are welcome to engage in the activity, but just to inform me about it first. From there, depending on how many employees inform me they will be taking part, I'm planning on having an intro. much like Kirk's, and also depending on what tasks their parents complete during the day, potentially have them view tasks done at other stations in the shop. Since some employees are welding predominantly all day, I find it senseless to have the kids stand there, not doing much, but exposed to welder's flash.

Although I am employed at a small company of approx. 60 workers so this might not work if you are at a large company
I hope this helps!
