What are some ways a person with a freshly acquired Occupational Health and Safety Certificate from Ryerson go about getting his foot in the door with respect to an entry level position in OHS?

Ive looked high and low on various job search websites but they all want at least 5-7 years experience.

So how does one get the experience if no one seems to be offering?

Or am I not looking hard enough?

My Background:
Professional Student @ Ryerson
Automotive (Service, Customer Service and also a hobby).

Also took a few courses in Facility Management.

Resume can be provided which highlights all of my educational and working experiences.

Just want to make something out of this Certificate, instead of it looking fancy inside a frame.

Apply for those jobs anyways. Many employers ask for experience but will hire the right person with no experience. I was in the same boat as you, just out of school with no experience and I ended up with a great H&S Coordinator job. Apply for EVERY job you see...use the law of averages...

I could not agree more with LMR on that.

Apply to everything in the field, check every site from Workopolis to LINKEDIN.com (a professional's facebook).

Keep your resume current, see what opportunities there are for internships, pitch your skills and options to consulting companies, use head hunters, and keep at it.

Keep an eye out on Municipal Health and Safety postings, various postings for provincial and federal govt and companies of all types.

As you have some Facilities experience, Municipal would greatly benefit from that as would any Safe Workplace Association (check HSAGS first).

Just my two cents on the subject.
