Health and Safety Manager (1 year contract)

The Position:
As a member of the Corporate Human Resources team, the Health and Safety Manager reports to the Manager, Human Resources and plays a central role in the prevention and identification of operational, physical and environmental factors that may cause or contribute to accidents or injury to employees, patients, and visitors across Canada and to ensure corporate compliance with Provincial and Federal legislation. Additionally, the Health and Safety Manager will manage the Health and Safety committee and WHMIS programs. The successful candidate is responsible for providing expertise, leadership, guidance and training in all safety areas.
Key responsibilities include:
* Promoting safety awareness through the recognition of hazards and promoting safe work practices.
* Ensuring compliance with corporate policies and legislative requirements.
* Developing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating Health and Safety programs, policies, and procedures necessary to ensure compliance with applicable provincial legislation and quality assurance requirements.
* Investigating all accidents and prepares reports to management and WSIB/ WCB. Analyzing incidents/accidents statistics and making recommendations to prevent reoccurrence.
* In conjunction with the Disability Management function, ensuring an integrated approach to the prevention of workplace accidents, injuries and successful return to work arrangements.
* Actively participating in Joint Health and Safety Committee. Liaison with regional and other provincial Health & Safety Committees to ensure consistent adherence to corporate safety policies and procedures. Providing support to Imaging Safety Officer and Regional Laboratory Liaison Officer.
* Providing direction for all levels of management to re-enforce training and educational programs created. Facilitates/coordinates the training of staff- i.e. WHMIS, Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG).
* Maintaining records of safety audits and reviews. Ensuring proper documentation and records are kept- i.e. Employee Training, Immunization of Employee's, First Aid, WHMIS.
* Participating in safety inspections to ensure hazard identification and that all safety measures are met.
* Compiling statistical reports relating to Health and Safety as required.
* Assisting with the documentation, distribution and implementation of Health and Safety programs.
* Ensuring Safety Program is audited and reviewed on an annual basis and report provided to management.
* Maintaining related manuals covering occupational health & safety issues in the format consistent with corporate document management practice. Reviewing and updating the document annually.
* Ensuring emergency evacuation procedures are performed annually.
* Monitoring Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) records to ensure compliance with quality assurance requirements and applicable provincial legislation.
* Conducting audits to ensure flammable liquids are stored in proper quantities and in a manner compliant with applicable provincial legislation.
* Performing other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
* Related post-secondary education preferred
* An accredited Health and Safety certification (CRSP is preferred)
* Minimum 4 - 6 years of industry related experience
* Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act and Canada Labour Code Part II
* Working knowledge of Health Care and Residential Facilities Regulation and X-Ray Safety Regulation 861 preferred
* Proficient computer skills with knowledge of Windows applications, including Word and Excel
* Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to build relationships, trust and commitment across all functional groups
* Understand and appreciate the importance of confidentiality
* Strong interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills
* Some travel required to Regional sites; may include intra-Province travel
