I have been surveying what is available across the Country (Canada) through OHS regulators and safety associations for training, education or even orientation for senior management (not 'supervisors). So far I have found almost nothing. Despite the fact that there is so much emphasis now on strong leadership, management commitment etc.

So, my question is:
a) What goes on by way of senior mgt OHS training or orientation in organizations?
b) If yes, what sort of topics are covered - e.g. legal responsibilities, due diligence, hazard identification, OHSM systems?

I would be happy to publish all answers, summarized on the list.

Hello Dilys,
We provide all of the items listed. The one area where I believe greater understanding is needed is in the area of cost/benefit analysis. This is a key factor in determining what can be deemed reasonably practicable.
See http://www.hrsdc.gc.ca/eng/labour/ipg/055.shtml
This should be taught in every post secondary educational institution that claims to prepare people to manage business. We provide a one hour seminar on this topic for those companies that do not quite understand the benefits of injury prevention.

Hi Tom:

Topics look good and I do agree re cost-benefit analysis; I am assuming that you provide the training in house? How long would each session be? (or topic).

Hi Dilys,
Generally all of our training programs are provided at the client facility. I find that training is most effective at the location where the hazards exist.
The sessions vary in length based on the user needs. It is the user's needs that need to be served therefore we let them determine the length and often ask if there are any specifics that they would like to have covered.

I would be glad to discuss our approach further. If you have a few moment give me a call.
