GTA Environmental, Health and Safety and Ergonomics Network
Working Together and Exchanging Best Practices

The National Safety Council defines the term sick building syndrome (SBS) as a “situation in which occupants of a building experience acute health affects that seem to be linked to time spent in a building, but no specific illness or cause can be identified”. SBS was first recognized some 25 years ago as one of the most severe failures of architectural design. Even though instances of SBS are rare today, many work environments are not nearly as healthy as they could and ought to be. Through a greater awareness of sustainability and green design, many offices of today are improving the quality of interior environments by giving occupants a greater control of the lighting and temperature of their workspaces and a more meaningful connection to the world outside.

Come and learn about the way natural environmental factors such as daylighting, passive ventilation and biophilia can improve worker health and productivity.

Tom Smahel, an associate consultant at Human Factors North, practices in the area of Human Factors and is a Canadian Certified Professional Ergonomist. A graduate of the Master of Architecture program at the University of Toronto, Mr. Smahel focused his studies on sustainable design, examining how to integrate bioclimatic principles into design in order to optimize building efficiency and improve human health, well-being, and performance. Tom will be the guest speaker for the May meeting. He will discuss how changes to the interior work environment can improve worker health and well being; group discussion is to follow.
