Max. hours of work

A question has come up to me once again concerning the hours a person can work. We are a federal employer and work during emergencies as well (avian influenza outbreak an example). The issue is how many hours a day a person can work and for how many days in a row. We may be looking at establishing a policy on this matter for both office and field staff. We used to have a general rule of 12 hours daily and 10 days before a day off was requried...but there was nothing official. Any input would be appreciated.
