View Full Version : Defining a lifting device

Hey all

My maintenance guy came to me and asked if this scenario would be considered a lifting device and subject to a load rating.

We have an industrial hand held sewing machine attached by a retractable wire to a beam. The beam is supporting the weight of the sewing device, and also allows the sewing machine to be moved from side to side.

The thinking was that the beam and retractable wire are supporting the sewing machine, to aid in lifting it to a certain height, thus it is a hoist and subject to load rating?

Any thoughts

Krista

You may want to call the OHS hotline at the Ministry of Labour. The call center employees have a list of managers, inspectors and program specialist that are available to answer this type of question. 1-800-991-7454

Krista, sounds like you have a tool counterbalance. It holds the weight of the sewing machine at any position you leave it?

I would say it is not a "lifting device" within the meaning of the Ontario Ind Regs.

Another caller suggested calling the MoL. Please let us know what they said.

I did not have to call MOL - I spoke with a H&S consultant we use regularly - after sending him pictures of the set he agreed that is would not be considered a lifting device as per the definitions of the Regs.

Thanks all
