Occupational Health and Safety Specialist
Parkland School Division No. 70, headquartered in Stony Plain, Alberta, is a large and dynamic school jurisdiction serving the diverse educational needs of approximately 9,400 rural and urban students in 25 distinctive and unique school communities immediately west of the City of Edmonton.
This is a newly created position, reporting to the Deputy Superintendent. You will be responsible for the development and implementation of division-wide occupational health and safety programs to meet regulatory standards, demonstrate due diligence, and minimize the risk of occupational incidents, injuries and illness.
Your key areas of focus will be:
Implement Divisional occupational health and safety programs and policies, ensuring their compliance with applicable federal and provincial regulations and best practices and actively pursue opportunities for continuous improvement;
Ensure all elements of OHS programs contribute to an improved safety culture and include such things as: Safe Work practices and procedures, WHMIS, exposure assessment, monitoring and control, incident investigation and follow-up, employee safety and first aid training, emergency response and safety audit and inspection.
Lead and facilitate Health and Safety committees.
Coordinate the Division’s Emergency Response plan and be the prime contact for special issues pertaining to occupational health and safety.
Qualifications:
Post secondary education in a related discipline, supplemented by a diploma or certificate in occupational health and safety
Professional certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), and/or Registered Safety Professional (CRSP)
5 – 7 years of progressively responsible experience in occupational health and safety
Ability to conduct occupational health and safety inspections, audit, and technical reports
Well developed verbal/written communication, interpersonal and presentation skills
Proficiency with MS Office applications
