SHE (Safety Health & Environment) Specialist
18 Month Contract
Rexdale Plant, Toronto, Ontario
There is an immediate 18 month contract position at the Rexdale Manufacturing Facility for a SHE (Safety Health and Environment) Specialist located at 195 Belfield Road, Toronto, Ontario. This position will report to the SHE Manager.
Primary responsibilities of this role will be to provide expertise and support to the Rexdale Plant in the SHE disciplines. This includes day to day administration of safety and environmental programs to ensure outstanding performance and compliance with governmental regulations. The successful candidate will act as SHE expert to support the Rexdale plant management team and other in-plant teams to assist them in improving SHE performance; decreasing costs through improvements and waste reduction activities and insuring that plant operations meet all applicable regulatory requirements.
Specific responsibilities will include the following:
Maintain Unilever SHE Framework Standards (SHE Management System). Perform SHE Management System audit assessments every 6 months.
Ensure that a robust fatality prevention program is in place (mobile equipment and pedestrian interface, lock out tag out, machine guarding, electrical safety, confined space entry, working at heights, explosion risks and contractor management.
Manage the WHMIS, Designated Substances, and other Ministry of Labour requirements
Focus on pro-active safety performance indicators including supporting behavior based safety process, and at risk conditions (Yellow F-Tag) reporting.
Ensure that all required environmental permits are obtained and maintained in accordance with all Unilever, local, provincial, and federal requirements. Maintenance reporting includes but is not limited to: Proforma (Unilever internal report); NPRI (chemical inventories, air emissions); TDG, Hazardous Waste Management (waste disposal); Storm water discharge); Waste water discharge; Environmental Emergencies (E2).
Coordinate the plant Waste Management program, including storage, manifesting, record keeping, and disposal site selection. Work independently with Corporate SHE to identify and evaluate alternative disposal methods to reduce costs and minimize impact to the environment
Develop and implement a wide variety of SHE related training programs. Programs will include training at all levels of the organization
Manage the collection and evaluation of all industrial hygiene data including but not limited to chemical, noise and other physical agents, and ergonomics. Communicate findings and propose corrective measures while working closely with operating departments.
Coordinate the implementation of the plant's safety process by leading plant SHE teams, conducting audits and inspections, developing plans and programs and representing the department as necessary. Serve as an active member of the plant's SHE Pillar (Joint Health & Safety Committee and provide leadership in the SHE pillar as part of the TPM process.
Facilitate the administration of the Plant's occupational medical program. Work closely with the occupational health service provider and human resource worker's compensation specialists to ensure that all compensation claims are handled in accordance with Unilever guidelines. Assist with the implementation and evaluation of the medical surveillance testing program ( hearing, respirator fit tests)
The ideal candidate will possess a 4-year technical degree in Safety or Environmental related field and have 3-5 years experience managing Safety and Environmental compliance in a manufacturing environment. A professional SHE certification is a definite asset (ROH / CRSP / CIH).
